Sedation Dental Implants Las Vegas

A dental implant is a great way to replace a missing or decaying tooth, and bring back your beautiful smile. Sometimes people need a dental implant because of an injury or gum disease. A dental implant has its own metal “root” that is surgically implanted into your jaw. After that heals, an abutment (tiny metal post) is attached on top of the implant. Lastly, a natural-looking fake tooth (crown) is attached to the abutment. Implants are a permanent solution, unlike removable dentures or bridges.

Many people have phobias and fears about having surgery. While it is true that dental implant surgery is invasive, it does not have to be painful if the dentist uses sedation dentistry. In fact, you should only feel pressure, not awful pain during sedation dentistry for dental implants.

Our dentist uses different types of sedation dentistry, including laughing gas (nitrous oxide), oral sedation, painkiller injections and IV sedation. Sometimes a combination of those choices are used. There is no one-size-fits all. Different patients have different needs. Our dentist will take your medical history and note any medications you are currently taking to find the best way to keep you pain-free during your dental implant procedure.

An injectable painkiller (local anesthesia) numbs the gums and jawbone area. Our dentist will make sure to give you plenty, and test the area before starting your dental implant surgery.

If you're having these issues, maybe you should consider having a dental implant.

Temporary dental fixes

Laughing gas is inhaled through a face mask before the dental implant surgery begins. Laughing gas should calm any anxieties or worries you may have during the dental implant procedure. You should be able to drive home after the procedure as the gas wears off relatively soon.

Oral sedation is a prescription pill (usually Valium) that you take an hour before your dental implant surgery to ease your anxiety. Our dentist will write a prescription for the oral sedation pill during your consultation. Because this pill is taken an hour before surgery, you will need someone to drive you to your dental visit as you may feel drowsy.

IV sedation can help eliminate pain and anxiety at the same time. An IV is a tube that goes into your arm and carries the sedation medication. You should be in a drowsy state of bliss and not feel any pain from the dental implant procedure, but you may feel pressure. You will be monitored the entire time to make sure you are getting the proper amount of oxygen.

If you plan to have an IV sedation, make sure that you have someone to drive you home after the dental implant procedure. You should also have a friend or family member at home who can help you around during the downtime as the sedation wears off.
